The media was treated to a tour of the John McKay Center today, so we sent our photographer John McGillen along to document the progress as the athletics building continues to come to life. The tour was led by senior associate athletic director Mark Jackson. As you can see, the indoor turf field has already been laid down in the basement. Plus, there’s a shot of the view out of Lane Kiffin’s office which looks over the football practice field. And, several of the offices are dedicated to former student-athletes like Sam Cunningham, Mark Sanchez and Keyshawn Johnson who generously donated to the project.
[Always the competitors, USC football wanted to be the first to do everything in the new John McKay Center. The RipsIt Blog documented their efforts.]

Fifteen USC football players will travel to Haiti the week after graduation to build houses and deliver supplies to a country destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 2010. The team of Trojans will build a minimum of three houses and transport more than 2,000 lbs. of supplies for orphanages and schools as part of the May deployment of Hope Force International, an organization which specializes in quick strike disaster relief. The troop departs May 14 and will live in Haiti until May 19. Matt Barkley and his family spearheaded this venture but his teammates have rallied behind the cause.

ESPN has a rare positive USC article on the return of Matt Barkley. Here’s a taste…
Refreshing, isn’t it? Barkley doesn’t have enough cash to buy his own No. 7 replica jersey in the campus bookstore, but he’s the centerpiece of USC’s renowned football program. He tools around campus on a beach cruiser bike, has dated his high school sweetheart since they were 16 (they’ve known each other since age 5) and he drinks a cold one about as often as Trojans fans send thank-you notes to the NCAA’s committee on infractions. He’s low maintenance.

As the 2012 USC football team begins spring practice on March 6 for 15 sessions, there seems to be one overriding theme: “Unfinished business.” The buzz started late last December, when All-American safety T.J. McDonald announced he was returning to USC for his 2012 senior season by saying, “I want to come back and finish things out and be part of something great.” The very next day, Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Matt Barkley declared his intention to return to Troy by saying, “The 2012 team has some serious unfinished business to attend to.” Both players, along with their teammates and many college football prognosticators, realize that 2012 could be a special season for the Trojans… read the entire Spring Media Release
